Detroit said there is no criminal investigation against the company

The engine control computers handle emissions controls, among other tasks.A spokeswoman for Robert Bosch LLC in suburban Detroit said there is no criminal investigation against the company in the U.Bosch sold a large number of engine control computers to VW for its diesel engines, and the company is one of the world's biggest suppliers of fuel injection technology, spokeswoman Linda Wholesale Recycled Fabrics Beckmeyer said.3 billion in the case involving VW diesel cars that cheated on emissions tests. One company that could be involved in the probe is German auto parts supplier Bosch, which has extensive North American operations.Yates also wouldn't comment on whether US investigators had been successful in navigating Germany's strict privacy laws to get such crucial documents as internal company emails..Daimler says the lawsuit's claims are without merit and that the Justice Department investigation is unrelated.

Investigators also have contacted German automaker Daimler AG, maker of Mercedes-Benz cars, seeking information on "possible indications of irregularities" in emissions certification.S. That allowed the cars to emit more pollution while being driven.Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates said investigators are looking at "multiple companies and multiple individuals" in the probe, but she did not identify any of them at a news conference to announce a settlement of up to $15. Elizabeth Cabraser, the lead attorney for car owners that are suing VW, said Tuesday that civil claims can continue against Bosch, which made the "defeat devices" that turned pollution controls on during Environmental Protection Agency lab tests and turned them off on real roads.

Such steps are taken because a company know

The New York Times published a front-page story on how executives at the company had apparently known since 1971 that their product likely contained asbestos. It has, over the years, represented just the clean and caring sort of feeling that the advertisements for the product have proclaimed.69 billion verdict to 22 plaintiffs who alleged that the company had failed to warn consumers that the talcum powder contains dangerous levels of the cancer-causing chemical asbestos. Documents that the newspaper obtained under a US law, that allows the procurement of certain records, showed that executives at the company discussed and debated the issue internally, tossing around solutions that included removing talc from their talcum powder. The result is well known: there was no warning to consumers; talc continued. They include not just people who claimed they had developed cancer but also those who said they developed mesothelioma from airborne asbestos particles, the jagged particles of which apparently lodged in their lung tissue, leading to the disease. In most cases, even the mere rumour that a product, particularly a product that is used primarily for children, is associated with cancer is enough to get most people to stop purchasing it. A website titled "Our talc is safe” has also been launched in the hope of allaying consumer concerns. Consumers lose trust in a product, either by information of a possible connection between the product and cancer, or revealing company negligence in relation to safety precautions attached to products. The plaintiffs in the suit had developed ovarian cancer.

Such steps are taken because a company knows that consumer confidence and trust determine sales, particularly where products for children are concerned. It is said to be one of the most recognisable scents in the world — the smell of Johnson & Johnson baby powder, used first by mothers on their babies, then even later on, continuing into childhood and adulthood. Since the New York Times story came out last week, the company’s stock fell further. The magnitude of the verdict was supposed to send a message to the company that this sort of negligence is unacceptable. One defence tactic was to take out a full-page advertisement in the New York Times, explaining that the science of the connection between talc and ovarian cancer is far from certain and enumerating all the health and safety measures that the company had taken to ensure this. When the jury verdict came in last summer, and the possible connection was revealed, the company’s stock plummeted 11 per cent.By arrangement with Dawn.In addition to individual lawsuits, there are also class-action lawsuits that seek all plaintiffs who have ovarian cancer and used the baby powder for long periods of time. On its website, the American Cancer Society says that the results connecting talc to ovarian cancer have been mixed, in that there has not been a direct and incontrovertible connection between the two. Six of the plaintiffs had already died of ovarian cancer by the time the case came to trial.”It is difficult to tell whether the exercise in limiting the damage from lawsuits will be successful. All of this may be about to change. If one looks at the science, then it is true that there are studies that show no link between talc from Johnson’s baby powder and ovarian cancer and various lung ailments. Since the lawsuit in St.In recent years, however, the company has also begun to manufacture an alternative version of the powder that does not contain talc and contains only cornstarch. In addition to consumers, who must assess the risks themselves, official agencies entrusted with ensuring public health must also assess the results of the lawsuits in the United States and decide whether they too need to issue their own warnings.

The websites and FAQs as well as full-page newspaper advertisements all draw attention to the fact that the link between ovarian cancer and talc are dubious. The South Asian consumer, like the consumer everywhere else, must decide whether or not the risks are such that they should stop using products containing talc reportedly containing harmful ingredients. Louis, many additional lawsuits have been filed all over the United States. The New York Times advertisement taken out by the company, glibly titled "Science, not Sensationalism”, said: "If we had any reasons to believe our talc was unsafe, it would be off our shelves. Finally, lawyers must also see if there are any affected people on whose behalf they can sue the company on the basis of the evidence unearthed by the earlier lawsuits and the New York Times investigation.Modern life in America, or anywhere in the world for that matter, involves constant contact with a barrage of chemicals; Wholesale Lycra Fabrics the latter are present in what we eat, in the air we breathe, in the products we use.In South Asia, the risks are just the same as anywhere else in the world. If they have to use baby powder, maybe they can opt for the version made out of pure cornstarch rather than take a chance with talc. Some of the company’s defences are somewhat substantiated. There is no getting away from chemicals, even if we know that some of them are carcinogens that can cause one or another type of cancer. Last summer, a jury in St.Company executives talked about how the baby powder was the Holy Grail amongst all their products and changing its ingredients or adding warnings would cause a huge hit to company profits. Louis, Missouri, handed out a record 4.Last week, there was more news. In the case of baby powder, however, many mothers may choose to err on the side of safety. There are also studies that show that there may be a link. The article detailed how studies that showed the presence of asbestos in the powder were discredited or suppressed

A simple but endearing public relations exercise

Facebook algorithms generate little calendars of our activities and friendships, sometimes even with our own siblings! So as time slips by, paper calendars become more and more relics of a bygone era. It used to be that at this time of the year, we put the past behind us and brought in the future — with calendars. Without a calendar planner to carve and break up time into smaller bits, life would be a series of endless events without coherence or significance. Except the odd doctor’s waiting room or a government office, I hardly see wall calendars anymore. Art that I would have never been exposed to in my little corner of Jamshedpur.

A simple but endearing public relations exercise, offered and received warmly. Much sought after, the diary was a source of contention in the family, going to the elder sibling, if not elders, ostensibly to jot study notes, but sooner or later covered with sketches, doodles, and some very non-academic notes. Then there were the calendars with heft and sheen — the corporate ones. Ltd”. Life is inconceivable without it.So iconic was this calendar that it outlived the year, not leaving the house long after its time was done. Not all calendars were created equal. And then a knowing smile was exchanged!Today, Google and Windows do our time-flipping for us so that we don’t have to. Later, the strikingly modernist lines of M. But just like the wall clock that ticks away reassuringly in a corner, even though it’s my phone that I keep time with, there’s a gap on a wall or a desk somewhere that I know a good calendar can still fill with style and elan.At this time, a New Year’s start by the Gregorian calendar, most of us — no matter who we are or what we do — take stock. What was its secret? After its calendar life, the pages were resurrected as framed art prints on walls in a number of households, including mine.F.

His way of saying: "Thanks for shopping with us!”From the smallest kirana store to the biggest companies, nearly every business put out one. My mother chanced upon one while visiting a home in Patna: they had relatives in Jamshedpur and the print was identical to what we had on our walls. It was through this calendar that I first chanced upon the long-necked, dark-eyed women of V.Of the calendars we received in Jamshedpur, where I spent my growing years, there were a couple of particularly memorable ones. Certainly none that catches my attention. Printed on thick, glossy paper, it was an annual treasure that blew all others into backrooms. Yes, some corporations and stores still put them out, but somehow they seem to lack the beauty and class of the old ones. Somewhere there must have been a simpler one for wider distribution, but this one was eagerly awaited in our home. If you went to a store sometime in late November/December, and you were a regular, the storekeeper would give a big smile and swiftly whip out from under the counter a paper roll held in place with a rubber band, and hand it with a flourish with both hands, saying "Happy New Year!”. "Best compliments of ABC Co.This is how calendars came to us.Is it time to bring them back? Anachronisms, and not necessary, perhaps.. These art calendars were a limited-edition item, and typically distributed to senior officers. The digital calendars on our computers, mobile phones and watches automatically ring in the new year.On walls and tabletops, in homes and offices, in stores, in hospitals and clinics, the calendar was an ubiquitous presence. Prabha; and the guileless, mysterious faces of Anjolie Ela Menon’s protagonists, to my best recollection. The most basic ones had large numbers printed on a grid in simple type and hand the not inconsiderable number of government holidays printed in red.

Elder siblings went to great lengths to keep them away from the prying eyes and hands of pesky younger ones.On bark and bone, walls and stone, on cloth and paper, by the moon and the sun, by sowing and reaping and now, in that ephemeral thing we call digital space, we humans have marked and measured time.It is probably the world’s oldest calendar. But as time slipped by, the way we mark it has also changed. I particularly remember the one from Tata Steel, or Tisco as it was called then. Whether it’s been an annus horribilis or a great year, there is that notion that time has passed by and something new lies in wait. There would be a little flip calendar at the bottom, with pages to be ripped off month by month. Some even came with a smaller spiral-bound desktop version, and the more coveted item — the diary. By the time January ended, there were nearly a dozen around the house, and by now the domestic help and drivers were also getting some. I can’t remember all of them, but I do recall at some point, the Tisco calendar became a veritable repository of contemporary Indian art prints. Discovered in 1960 in Belgian Congo, it’s a bone marked with notches — their exact purpose is still unknown, but it’s certain they were used to measure time, possibly by the moon or some other celestial body. Yes. The cheapest had the year on one sheet, a scroll of sorts attached to a metal strip on one end and a cloth loop to hang it from. The lady replied, a little embarrassed. Husain. A flip, an unfurling of rolled-up sheets, and a new calendar would be on the wall, heralding the start of a new year. What brings a baboon bone — a fibula, to be precise — to mind at the end of the year? The Ishango Bone is a 20,000-year-old reminder that since the beginning man has been marking time. Then there were the "God” calendars as we used to call them, with a single colourful picture of a deity, occasionally a classic mother and child image depicting Yashodhara and Krishna, inspired by the iconic paintings of Raja Ravi Verma. It Wholesale Lycra Fabrics was a new calendar. Tisco calendar? My mother asked, somewhat undiplomatically. Not just that, visiting relatives often asked for and carted away the neatly cut out pages
